Rainey Institute’s robust Group Class program provides an artistic offering for everyone! Whether you’d like to learn how to become a better dancer or learn how to read music, there is a group class for you. Classes are available to children and adults each Saturday beginning the last weekend of September and ending the last weekend of April.
Explore ballet in Rainey’s beginners ballet class. Program participants will use the ballet barre and learn basic steps and positions. These are then combined to create simple combinations. Participants will learn step names and basic barre skills.
Ages 5–9, 10+
Rainey Institute’s beginner African Dance class incorporates movements focused on rhythms, songs, and culture as well as dance choreographies traditionally performed for rites of passage, courtship, and other cultural occasions. The class emphasizes community building and individual potential.
Rainey Institute’s Hip-Hop Group Class teaches rhythm, coordination, musicality and choreography without suggestive music or movements. Program participants enjoy an energetic and fast-paced dance class that develops focus, strength, and agility while having fun.
Rainey Institute’s Modern Dance Class incorporates many styles of classical modern dance; these classes focus on contractions, spirals, basic floor work, and elemental concepts of space, time and force, developing technical proficiency, musicality, rhythmic accuracy.
Interested in getting a great workout and learning martial arts at the same time? Then P.H.I.T. is the class for you! Short for Physical Health International Training, P.H.I.T helps program participants get in shape while learning martial arts basics. Teaching Artist Titus Golden employs years of experience, incorporating kuntao, silat, bagua, taiji, and capoeira art forms into his training.
Tumbling I & II
Ages 3–5, 6–9
Looking to improve your child’s motor skills? Rainey Institute’s Tumbling I & II classes do just that through basic movement and gymnastic exercises.
Dance Mastery Level III
Grades 3 – 8
Rainey Institute is excited to help advanced dance students take their skills to the next level with individualized instruction. Audition to be placed in Rainey Institute’s Dance Mastery Level III program. Level III students cycle through Modern, Hip-Hop, Ballet, and Fitness classes throughout the week and participate in Rainey Institute’s Dance Mastery on Fridays. Rainey’s Dance involves learning repertoire from various national and local teaching artists/choreographers from Rainey Institute and GroundWorks Dance Theater. Students meet weekday nights Monday through Friday.
Come and join this interactive arts experience! Explore your ideas and create original art using different designs, colors, textures, and mediums.
Explore digital design in Rainey Institute’s Digital Arts group class! Program participants will utilize computers to explore graphic design, digital photography, and other digital and graphic media.
Looking to get a little messy? Then Clay 101 is the class for you! Let your ideas run wild and create beautiful sculptures using clay as your artistic medium.
Learn sewing basics in Rainey Institute’s Beginner Sewing Group Class! Get comfortable with a sewing machine, learn pattern layouts, cutting, essential construction skills, and finishing techniques.
Take it up a step and join Rainey Institute’s Intermediate Sewing Group Class! Perfect your sewing skills by making piping, attaching collars and sleeves, setting in smocked inserts, adding plackets, and creating gathered skirts, box pleats, and blinded hems.
Interested in the world of fashion? Even if you’re not planning to be a professional fashion designer, you’ll enjoy this class. Program participants will move through various phases of fashion design including: research and mood boards, collections and trends, sketching, draping, pattern making, and construction.
Ages 6-8, 9-11, 12+
Lights, camera, action! Rainey Institute’s Drama Group Classes provide youth and adults the opportunity to increase their acting ability by learning stage directions, pantomiming, improvisation, monologues, and more! Gain increased self-esteem and self-confidence.
Music Understanding is a comprehensive course that covers the fundamental components of music theory, including ear training, music notation, rhythm, note values, and other essential skills. Suited for beginning students of all ages, this course utilizes innovative and engaging activities to allow the musician within each student shine.
In small groups, children learn to recognize musical phrases and develop body coordination through a diverse collection of songs, chants, and movement activities. Children (and caregivers) will be physically and musically engaged through creative and fun experiences while beginning their life-long musical journey.
Ages 14 – 18
Rainey Institute’s Teen Leadership Group Class teaches students life skills while helping them with career exploration. Participants who successfully complete the program are eligible interview to receive a Teen Assistant position in Rainey’s Summer Arts Camp.
