Making Rainey History
We’re celebrating Black History Month with a milestone moment for Cleveland’s century-old arts institution
This Black History Month, the Rainey Institute celebrates a historic milestone: Marcella J. Brown became the first Black Executive Director in the organization’s nearly 100-year history—and only the fourth person to hold this title in the last 60 years.
As Board Chair Bill Lipscomb noted, “We feel truly fortunate to pass organizational leadership to such a qualified professional with a passion for arts education, and deep connections to the Cleveland community.”
Making Rainey’s Future
Marcella has been leading Rainey for six months using that time to hear from staff, board members, parents, artists, and community partners to consider what the future holds for Rainey. She’d love to hear from you too! Do you have questions for Marcella about Rainey’s programs, her vision for Rainey’s future, or suggestions of what we could offer? Use the link here to share it with her!
“Rainey holds a special place in my heart. I’ve seen the impact this organization can have on a family; it’s made a huge impact on my own kids. Being the first Black Executive Director is a blessing I didn’t realize in accepting the role, but I am honored to carry forward,” said Marcella. “I look forward to hearing your ideas for making Rainey an amazing place where the arts change lives!”
We’ll gather everything together and Marcella will work on answering them in the next few weeks. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn @RaineyInstitute to see her responses.
“Arts education is critical to the development and expansion of young minds. Rainey provides enriching programs in a safe and nurturing environment where Cleveland’s young learners can express their creativity, feel valued, and build confidence.”
— City of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb
